Guide for Wearing Contact Lenses for the First Time

The transition to wearing contact lenses can be challenging for most people. Putting something on top of your eye is not natural. It may be uncomfortable at first and challenging to put in at first. You may not always know what to do when first getting lenses. So, here are some tips to help you along the way:

  • Wash Your Hands: Wash your hands prior to putting on your lenses. Use a mild soap to remove any oils that may irritate your eye. Always do this before putting on your contacts.

  • Rinse Contacts in Contact Solution: Do not use tap water! Tap water typically has bacteria in it that can lead to an eye infection. Only rinse it with a contact solution. If you drop the lens, pick it up and rinse it in the solution again.

  • Start with the Same Eye: Usually, the prescription lenses vary for the left and right contacts. It’s a good idea to always start with the same eye and lens every time to avoid any confusion or mix-ups.

  • Use Fingertips When Handling Lenses: Always use your fingertips when handling your contact lenses. Do not use your nails as you can damage the lenses that way.

  • Use Both Hands: Early on it can be hard to insert your lenses. We recommend using your dominant hand to handle the lenses while your non-dominant hand holds your eye open.

  • Close Your Eyes & Blink: Slowly close your eyes once you have inserted your lenses. Then open them and blink a few times to get them aligned properly.
